Slimline ICE models launched by Vescent Photonics at recent CLEO’17

After several years in development, the first in a new range of Slimline ICE (SLICE) models was launched by Vescent Photonics at the recent CLEO’17 meeting.

The SLICE-QT is a four-channel temperature controller for thermally stabilising a photonic device, laser or non-linear crystal.

The QT is compatible with both TECs and resistive heaters, and features auto tuning along with 40 watts of control power available to the user.

Lake Shore’s Cryogenic Temperature Sensors now on elliotscientific.com

Lake Shore offers four types of sensor for cryogenic temperature measurement based on voltage (diodes) or resistance. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, and these can be easily seen at-a-glance via our new Cryogenic Temperature Sensors page.

For example: Of the three most common NTC resistor materials, sputter-deposited zirconium oxy-nitride aka Cernox™ – the others being Germanium and Ruthenium Oxide (Rox™) – is the most versatile. Cernox™ thin film resistors are only manufactured by Lake Shore Cryotronics, and incorporated into robust sensor packages.

Cernox™ works over a broad temperature range, does not follow a standard curve, has sensitivity below 1 K, and is highly resistant to ionising radiation and magnetic field-induced errors. These features can be instantly seen on the page via our colourful graphics:

 0.1 to 420  ✘  ✔  ✔  ★★★ (1 K +)

In all, nine different temperature sensor materials are detailed and an informative datasheet is available to download. However, Elliot Scientific still recommends contacting us for expert advice on sensor choice for your application.

Light pinpoints stress and strain – A Brillouin’t idea from OZ Optics

Remote Pipeline, Perimeter, and Structural Monitoring…

dsts-applicationsForesight™, from OZ Optics, is a sophisticated Distributed Strain and Temperature Sensor (DSTS) based on Brillouin scattering in an optical fibre. It can measure subtle changes in both temperature and strain along the length of the fibre over time, or the rapid location detection of a major disturbance within a second.

By wrapping or embedding a fibre inside a structure, such as an oil pipeline or dam, detection of the structure being strained or heated/cooled is possible, allowing for pre-emptive maintenance. Such monitoring capability is invaluable in critical structures where cracks and failure could involve loss of life or other unprecedented costs.

Foresight™ can also detect and report larger signals within one second with only a slight loss of accuracy. This sort of response speed is ideal for security applications or strains caused by earthquakes where an immediate measurement and reaction may be required.

Distributed PLC monitoring of cryogenic temperature sensors new in from Lake Shore

Lake Shore’s latest 240 Series offers a convenient, modular input solution for precision monitoring of cryogenic temperature sensors in large-scale applications employing distributed PLC-based control.

Delivering the same precision temperature measurement performance as Lake Shore’s own trusted benchtop cryogenic instruments, widely distributed high energy applications like particle accelerators and fusion reactors as well as industrial sites will benefit from this new instrumentation.
